How many times have you told yourself – I can’t do this! While this may be true with respect to your current capabilities, it’s limiting. It closes the door and constraints your thinking. Your brain is programmed to believe and act in ways that ascertains this is true. This is the negativity bias or the blind spot that we all naturally have. Our brain looks for evidences of flaw to prove the point and think its right.
Now add this 3 letter word ‘YET’ to the end of the sentence. Change your thinking from ‘I can’t do this!’ to ‘I can’t do this YET’ and see how your perspective changes with the addition of this one word. Not able to do something YET opens the door of possibilities. It forces your brain to think in ways that is expansive not constricted.
For example, Shift from thinking..
I am not a good writer to pitch for a top publication to I am not a good writer YET
I am not a good singer to audition for a reality show to I am not a good singer YET
I am not good at math to get a decent SAT score to I am not good at math YET
I am good enough at project planning to ask for a raise to I am not enough at planning YET
“It’s true that you’re not good enough yet,” Godin says, “None of us are. But if you commit to trying hard enough and long enough, you’ll get better.”
The truth is nobody is good enough at the start. It takes dedicated practice.
When you implement this simple formula, notice the shift in your mindset and then take baby steps to move from not good enough to being good, better and the best.
I have seen how my perspective has changed using this 3 letter word. It’s a formula that has worked every time whether it’s writing for a blog or a presentation to executive management or mastering a new skill. It will work for you too.
Not being at a certain level does not mean you cannot get there. The first step is to believe in its possibility and next is to take action.
Now its your turn..
What is it that you can’t do YET? And what is the next step that you are willing to take to move ahead?
Until Next,
Keep Smiling..
