How can each of us make our part?

I was recently asked, How can each of us make our part? “In a man’s world” was the unsaid statement. It made to think .. does the stereotype avatar of women still exist in this century where we have women like Suu Kyi, one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia, Angela Merkel, presiding over the most powerful European economy, Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook COO  or Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman of Biocon, Asia’s largest biopharma and many other influential women who make powerful choices each day that influence our world?

Probably yes, the gender stereotype does exist. Echoing words of Sandberg “One of our problems is that stereotypically, we don’t expect women to lead”

So what makes these women different? Is their body composition different from ours? NO, but their mindset is. We are sadly socially conditioned to carry this mindset. I carried this mindset during my initial working days; was stuck by analysis paralysis for many years and have missed out on opportunities over thinking and overanalyzing. I have learnt the hard way that it’s important to be comfortable in your own skin. Today I am not afraid to present myself authentically. I am assertive in my own style and make my point even if its against the tide.

I strongly believe that each woman has a unique contribution to make. Its time to challenge the status quo, It’s important to break the stereotype. It’s time to put yourself out and “Lean in” to decision making. Do not be afraid of making decisions. Even if it’s wrong, it has taught you something. Learn from it and make a wiser decision. Hone your voice. Whatever field you are in, put your opinion out. Whatever type of personality you have, let it shine through. Do not be over apologetic about what you have to say. Be courageous and stand out for who you are, the opinions you have and the decisions you make.When you are authentic and being yourself, you will come across exceptionally well.

Step up and Stand out.Let your voice be heard.  True development happens when diverse perspectives are brought in and women have a key role to play by voicing their opinions.

International women’s day being round the corner, I would like to dedicate this post to all you beautiful women. Let us all celebrate each of our unique journeys together and be proud of who we are and what we stand for!!
