Communicating Boundaries

In a society where people have the ability to communicate instantly, a quick response can become an expectation. In a virtual world today .. in this internet era, where connectivity is 24*7, we are expected to be available round the clock.

But it’s an expectation that we can’t always meet, in fact it’s unproductive and not healthy! Not being available 24*7 is the key to BEING EFFECTIVE. Though it seems paradoxical, understanding this and setting the right expectations is critical.

This applies not only to our professional lives but also personal lives. One of the main keys to managing our own time is managing expectations with others.

When this gap between expectations and what we can actually do increase, it leads to guilt,especially when it comes to the people closest to us. When we’re pressed for time..  friends, family members, or coworkers reaching out to us even in the nicest way possible can feel stressful.

One of the ways is to address this challenge in a way that helps you focus at work and shows that you value your relationships is setting boundaries and clearly communicating the boundaries.

For example, If your work needs more attention from you at certain times to meet a deadline – you may explain the situation to your significant other informing them that you will only be available for calls if there’s an emergency or tell them if text works better than a call for reaching out to you at certain times of the day. Similarly it also can be helpful to notify your workplace about your personal commitments and you will only be available for calls if there’s an emergency.

This is a healthy in-between to balance work and relationships that matter.
